The Japanese exfoliating body towel is a bathroom staple in Japan for one simple reason: it turns a small amount of soap into a rich, cushiony lather while gently buffing away dead skin. Here is how to get the most from yours.
Step by step
- Wet the towel thoroughly with warm water.
- Add a small amount of body wash to the centre — far less than you think you need.
- Scrunch and stretch the towel a few times, holding both ends, to whip air into the soap. A dense foam appears within seconds.
- Glide, do not scrub. Move the towel over your skin in long, light strokes and let the weave do the exfoliating.
Get the pressure right
A common mistake is pressing hard. A Japanese body towel is designed to exfoliate with almost no pressure, so let the texture work. Use a softer weave for the face, chest and other delicate areas, and a firmer weave for the back, elbows, knees and heels.
How often?
Two to three times a week is plenty for most people. Daily use is fine with a soft towel and a light touch; if your skin feels tight or pink, ease off.
After your shower
Rinse the towel well, wring it out, and hang it somewhere airy to dry. A quick-drying weave that never stays damp is the secret to keeping it fresh for months.
