Sponges and towels do the cleaning — but only if they stay clean themselves. A few easy habits keep them fresh and stop bacteria building up.
Dry is the secret
Bacteria thrive in damp, airless sponges. After every use, rinse, wring out and stand the sponge on its edge or hang the towel where air circulates. A quick-drying weave is your best defence.
Sanitise regularly
- Kitchen sponges: microwave damp for one minute (non-metallic only), or soak in a diluted bleach solution, once a week.
- Konjac and body towels: rinse well and let them dry fully; refresh konjac in just-boiled water for a minute or two.
Separate jobs, separate tools
Never use the same sponge on dishes and surfaces, or the same cloth on the sink and the floor. Colour-code to keep them apart.
Know when to let go
Replace a kitchen sponge when it smells or loses firmness, a konjac sponge every four to six weeks, and a body towel when the weave goes slack. Fresh tools clean better and more safely.
