I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit aisen Japan and meet the master craftsman Yoshihiko Fujii. We discussed the “Art Engineering” behind his “Urushi-coated Premium Hairbrushes” (now available on Amazon.com) and why his techniques are fundamentally different from mass-produced items or standard lacquerware.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the unique technology that defines his work.

1. The Problem with Standard Paint
Standard paint and Fujii’s proprietary resin have completely different drying mechanisms:
- Standard Paint: It dries from the surface first. While the top looks dry, a “skin” forms while the inside remains wet. This leads to a phenomenon where the entire layer eventually peels off once the inside finally dries and shrinks.
- Fujii’s Proprietary Resin: This primer is engineered to dry from the “bottom” (where it touches the wood) and the “top” (surface) at the exact same time. This creates a permanent, solid bond that integrates the wood and the gold leaf into one structure.

2. Why Use Special Resin Instead of Glue?
- Material Compatibility: Traditional water-based glue (Mizunori) simply does not stick well to modern resin bases like urethane.
- the gold leaf inside the resin. This provides the durability needed for items used daily, like a hairbrush handle, ensuring the gold doesn’t wear off from friction
- Structural Strength: While glue only “sticks” the leaf to the surface, Fujii’s method locks the gold leaf inside the resin. This provides the durability needed for items used daily, like a hairbrush handle, ensuring the gold doesn’t wear off from friction.

The “Art Engineering” Process
The Starter Kit (What is Required)
- Wooden Brush Handle: The base of the product made of premium beach wood.
- Proprietary Primer/Resin: A special resin-based coating that acts as both the color and the adhesive.
- Gold Leaf: Provided in powder or flake form.
- Air Gun/Compressor: Used to blast the leaf onto the handle with air pressure.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Apply Primer: The resin is sprayed evenly onto the wooden handle.
- Monitor the Drying: You must wait for the exact moment when the resin is “tacky”—where the surface and bottom are starting to set at the same time.
- Air-Blast the Gold Leaf: Instead of pressing the leaf with a brush or paper (which makes it look flat and static), an air gun is used to blast the gold onto the resin. This creates “Yakudou-kan”—a sense of dynamic movement and energy.
- Additional Coating: Two more layers of resin are applied over the gold to completely seal and protect it.
- Mirror Finish: The surface is ground down and then buffed to a “両面鏡面仕上げ” (double-sided mirror finish), making it perfectly smooth to the touch and brilliant to the eye.

Why is this so difficult?
This technique cannot be easily automated or taught through a manual:

- The Timing: If the resin is too wet, the surface becomes messy; if it is too dry, the gold won’t stick.
- Thickness & Environment: The craftsman must adjust the coating thickness and timing based on 100-piece trial runs and years of experience.
- Unique Dynamism: While others can mimic the look with “flat” painting, they cannot achieve the fine, explosive energy of air-blasted gold without ruining the surface.

Value Proposition: Traditional Mastery vs. Art Engineering

Trusted by Professionals
The reliability of this method is why Fujii-san also supplies Sushi-geta (serving boards) to ultra-high-end sushi restaurants. These boards must handle constant cleaning and use while remaining beautiful—a testament to aisen Japan’s superior value proposition.
